Grazing programme

Keeping our grasslands in good condition is a vital part of our work.

Grazing is amazing!

Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust has been developing conservation grazing initiatives since 2002. We have a team of hard-working 'nibblers' helping us. Sheep, cows, horses and even water buffalo are all lending a 'hoof' on our nature reserves. Grazing allows wildflowers to flourish and gives space for wildlife to thrive.

Species and habitats that benefit

Our grazing programme benefits several Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) habitats such as lowland calcareous grassland, lowland fens and lowland heathland. It allows us to help species like those of most concern in the BAP: dingy skipper, grizzled skipper, chalkhill blue and white-letter hairstreak butterflies, skylarks, lapwings, brown hares, common lizards and slow worms.
