It all started back in 1982 when farm owner Nicholas Watts, who had always been interested in the wildlife on his farm, wanted to know exactly which birds were breeding there. He decided that every year he would walk his land and record all the birds he saw and heard. By 1992, he noticed there had been a big drop in numbers and so wanted to actively reverse this concerning trend. Since then, Nicholas and his family have implemented all sorts of conservation measures on the farm. One of his actions was to start feeding the birds on a large scale - the results of which were spectacular. It was this activity which generated the interest of the public and helped the farm grow to become the environmentally conscientious and well regarded company it is today.
Vine House Farm's long term relationship with The Wildlife Trusts began in 2008, after being impressed by their ethical attitude towards farming. Nicholas and his team farm in a way that encourages wildlife and the wide range of habitats it needs, whilst running a thriving company growing and selling bird seed, feeders and other wildlife gardening supplies to the general public.
This dedicated work, all undertaken at the farm itself, produces high quality products at a low cost, and with a relatively low carbon footprint. On top of this, Vine House Farm is dedicated to supporting the work of The Wildlife Trusts and donates 5% of their sales to the wildlife conservation charity. So far, the partnership has raised over £250,000 which has been distributed to local Wildlife Trusts across the country.
