Role Title: Livestock Checker
Reports to: Senior Reserves Officer
Work Area: Aldbury Nowers Nature Reserve
Expenses: Travel expenses between home and Aldbury Nowers Nature Reserve may be reimbursed if required.
Time Contribution: 60 minutes a week plus travel to Aldbury Nowers
To carry out a check once a week of the sheep grazing Aldbury Nowers Nature Reserve. This can easily be combined with a general visit to the nature reserve.
Grazing is essential to maintaining the rare wildlife of the meadow. Aldbury Nowers comprises two areas of hillside linked by The Ridgeway National Trail. The chalk grassland supports a dazzling array of chalk grassland flowers and over 30 species of butterfly.
The Trust uses its flying flock of Shetland sheep to prevent an impenetrable thatch of dead vegetation building up and hindering the following season’s new growth.
- Checking that sheep are all present
- Checking that sheep are in the correct place
- Look for signs of possible ill health on the sheep
- Checking water
Existing skills or experience needed
- An interest in wildlife and/or livestock
- General physical fitness to walk across grassland with some hills
