Wildfest 2023 - The Day Watford Went Wild!

Wildfest 2023 - The Day Watford Went Wild!

The local community turned out in good numbers to attend Wildfest 2023 at Cassiobury Park on Saturday 8 July - unperturbed by the threat of storms and showers!

The event was organised by Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, with the support of the many local groups and organisations working for wildlife across the region. Families enjoyed the opportunity to meet conservationists and explore the park for local wildlife, going on guided bird and butterfly walks, and bug hunts. An Animal Olympics saw children put their animal knowledge to the test and take part in activities which replicated some of the record-breaking creatures’ skills. Craft sessions, close-up animal encounters, storytelling, face painting and learning about ways to protect local wildlife species were also on the agenda. The event was sponsored by Affinity Water.

Speaking at the event, Esme Staunton Howe, Wilder Watford Officer at Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust said: “Lots of people have been very engaged with the idea of Wilder Watford. People have shared what they are already doing and I’ve heard amazing things, from children making bug hotels to house the insects in their gardens to building ponds.”

Dave Willis, Chair of HertsARG (Amphibian and Reptile Group), one of the exhibitors at the event added: “We’ve had a great day attending this Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust event. It was wonderful to see families so excited about their encounters with reptiles and amphibians and to get information about when and where they have seen them too.”

Anna Jarmolinska-Nowak from Affinity Water said: “Wildfest 2023 at Cassionbury Park in Watford was a great community event that brought together local organisations, wildlife charities and community to celebrate nature conservation work and help protect it for the future generations. We all have a role to play. As water company we are supporting our customers to reduce their water use through our Save Our Streams campaign so that we can all collectively help leave more water in the environment that supports local wildlife. We are working in partnership with the Trust on many projects including Biodiversity Project at our Local Nature Reserves and Wildfest was another great example of engagement on objectives we share together.”
