Stocker's Lake Nature Reserve in the Colne Valley
The Colne Valley is the first significant area of countryside to the west of London with over 200 miles of river and canal, 60 lakes, farmland, meadows and woodland. Its open spaces and nature reserves are little known by some local residents though.
What the Trust is doing
The Connecting People with the Colne Valley project ended in July 2014.
Working in partnership with Groundwork South, London Borough of Hillingdon and London Wildlife Trust, the project aimed to encourage local people to discover wildlife in the Colne Valley through events, volunteering opportunities and new educational materials.
Activities focussed on ten different nature reserves and country parks in the Colne Valley Regional Park, for which new factsheets were produced:
These included the Trust's reserves in the area - Stocker's Lake, Broadwater Lake, Uxbridge Alderglade and Old Park Wood; London Wildlife Trust's reserves - Frays Farm Meadows & Denham Lock Wood and Frays Island & Mabey's Meadow; London Borough of Hillingdon's Minet Country Park and Little Britian Lake, and the Colne Valley Regional Park's Denham Country Park.
The project led a number of guided walks, species identification workshops, children's activities and promoted the Colne Valley through talks to local community groups and attending local community events.
Volunteers have been recruited to help us look after our nature reserves in the Colne Valley and help us survey for different species such as water voles, butterflies and bats.
