Take on the Chalk Stream Challenge!
Embark on an adventure and discover the beauty of these unique, wildlife-rich habitats!
We’re excited about bringing the Chalk Stream Challenge to Hertfordshire. Our first route takes in part of the River Mimram at Panshanger Park. The activity pack and information below can also be downloaded to explore your local chalk stream and we will be developing more routes in the coming months.
The Chalk Stream Challenge is about exploring your local chalk stream, understanding what makes them so rare and important, whilst discovering their incredible wildlife and rich heritage.
By completing a variety of activities from five sections - Get to know your chalk stream, River Geography, River Life, River Fun and Save Water at home or school - you will become a chalk stream expert! You can then download your certificate to display with pride and you can even purchase one of the Chalk Stream Challenge badges.
This challenge is perfect for Scouts, Guides, school groups, families, or even enthusiastic individuals. The activities are flexible and can be tailored to various age groups.
Once you've completed the challenge, simply fill out the form on our website to order your badge!

The Chalk Stream Challenge was originally created by two volunteers as part of the Watercress and Winterbournes Landscape Partnership Scheme. The scheme, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, focuses on the headwaters of the Rivers Test and Itchen in Hampshire, and encourages children and young people to explore and learn about their local chalk stream.
With permission, the Challenge has been adapted by Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust with funding from Species Survival Fund and the Environment Agency. Thank you to all landholders that have agreed to be a Challenge Route!

How It Works
To take part in the Chalk Stream Challenge with your group, simply choose a route from the list below (or select your own) and download the challenge documents. These include chalk stream facts, a route map, spotter guides, and activities for your group to complete. Please ensure that you carry out your own risk assessments before undertaking the activities.
Once your group has completed the activities, fill out the form at the back of the 'How to Earn Your Badge' document (also available below) and email it to us at wildersupport@hmwt.org.
We offer fabric challenge badges for a small fee, though participation in the challenge is not dependent on purchasing one. If you'd like a badge, please complete the badge order form and email it along with your activities form. A printable certificate will also be provided.
