Woodlands for People and Wildlife
Our fabulous new project kicked off in autumn 2011.

With grants from Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), Veolia Environmental Trust and Gobions Woodland Trust we will be carrying out vital woodland restoration work and increasing the number and diversity of volunteers promoting and looking after the South Herts Woods area.
Restoring woodlands
Our woodland restoration work will include pond creation, coppicing, scrub removal and the opening up of woodland rides, which will allow a greater diversity of woodland plants and animals to thrive. Access to the woodlands will be enhanced by improving footpaths and installing footbridges and lots of seats and benches for wildlife-spotting opportunities... and those well-earned rests!
More information
In order to enhance the enjoyment of people visiting these wonderful woodland reserves and provide them with more information about what there is to see around them we will be creating new way-marked trails, producing reserve leaflets, and installing information boards and orientation panels.
Come to an event!
A key element of the project is to reach out to a wider audience and get local communities involved, so throughout the lifetime of the project we will be running a regular events programme including guided walks, ID courses, talks to community groups, family events and an annual “Welcome to the Woods” Day. These will provide opportunities for people to learn about all the amazing woodland wildlife and explore the reserves, as well as highlight how important and valuable these special places are.
