Herts Rivers Week 2026

Get ready to celebrate our second Herts Rivers Week! This May half term, we’re teaming up with local partners to shine a spotlight on Hertfordshire’s beautiful, globally rare chalk rivers.

Chalk rivers are as rare as rainforests - only around 260 exist worldwide, and 85% are found in England. Hertfordshire alone is home to 10% of this precious global resource. These wildlife-rich rivers support iconic species like Water Voles and Kingfishers, supply water for our communities, and help us adapt to climate change.

Herts Rivers Week is a county-wide celebration of our rivers and the amazing groups working to protect them. Join us for walks, talks, family activities and special events that will help you explore these special waterways, discover the wildlife they support, and learn about the challenges they face.

It’s not just a celebration - it’s a chance to take action. From saving water at home to joining a river clean-up, small changes can make a big difference.

Run an event

Would your group like to host an event as part of Herts Rivers Week?
Please contact events@hmwt.org to let us know and one of our team will be in touch to find out more so we can include it in our promotion for the week.

We'll be adding events to this page and our events listings over the next few weeks so don't forget to check back to see what's on near you.
