Can I request a memorial plaque on a Trust nature reserve for a loved one?
We offer a dedication plaque scheme at our Grebe House Wildlife Garden in St Albans. You can find out more here.
Can I scatter or bury ashes of a loved one on a Trust nature reserve?
Many of our sites are designated as SSSIs (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) and all are important refuges for wildlife. Ashes can alter soil chemistry and may have a detrimental impact on wildlife habitats, including rare and vulnerable ecosystems. We therefore cannot allow the scattering or burying of ashes at any of our nature reserves. Thank you for your understanding.
Can I plant a tree on a Trust nature reserve in memory of a loved one?
We recognise that for many people, planting a tree is synonymous with commemorating a loved one. We love trees too. However, maintaining and protecting significant trees on our nature reserves is not always feasible and unfortunately, we are therefore unable to accommodate requests for the planting of memorial trees on our sites. We do not plant individual trees as part of our regular conservation work. When we plant trees, we do so either at scale or as part of a hedgerow planting using saplings which are not suitable for memorial purposes. Thank you for your understanding.
Can I request a memorial bench on a Trust nature reserve for a loved one?
Each of our nature reserves has its own infrastructure requirements and priorities for management. Benches and other site infrastructure are subject to long term site planning. We are therefore no longer able to offer memorial benches at any of our nature reserves. You may instead wish to consider a dedication plaque at our Grebe House Wildlife Garden. Find out more about these here.
