As the nights start to draw in you might be treated to a visit by one of our most characteristic craneflies (often called Daddy Long-legs) - Meadow White-strip Tipula paludosa. This species has had a rather poor press as its larvae (along with other cranefly species) are called leatherjackets, but this one in particular eats the roots of grasses which can cause damage to lawns, but the large numbers required to cause significant damage seem to be a thing of the past. Which might well be bad news for the local mammal population as leatherjackets are preyed upon by Badgers, Hedgehogs and Foxes!
Whilst you’re marveling at how such an ungainly insect manages to even get off the ground, it’s amazing to know that there are over 350 different British species that also seem to defy the laws of aerodynamics! Around a 140 of the British list have been recorded from our area so far.
