Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust is a leading voice for wildlife conservation across Hertfordshire and Middlesex. As a charity we rely heavily on volunteers to help support and deliver our work programmes. 

One of the keys ways we let people know about the work of the Trust and to encourage people to take action for wildlife, is by giving talks to groups in the community. But to reach as many people as possible we need your help.

The groups we go out to fall into two categories:

• Adult groups including adult education, local community groups, health and wellbeing groups and religious group
• School and childrens groups – this would often include talking to a class or giving an assembly

When filling in the “more about me” box in the form below, please let us know if you are interested in giving talks to adults or childrens groups, or both. We will provide the presentations and equipment you would need to give the talk.

If you are a confident public speaker and have an interest in nature, then this role could be for you.

The role: 

• Giving talks to children, young people or adults
• Encouraging communities to take action for wildlife

Role location:
Flexible depending on volunteer location and willingness to travel. Please be aware there may be times you need to come to our St Albans office to pick up equipment.

Role responsibilities:

• Act as an ambassador for Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust
• Enthuse a new generation about wildlife
• Promote active involvement from all, no matter how small the action

Skills and experience you will need:

• Confident in public speaking
• Ability to communicate effectively with members of the public
• Enthusiastic about wildlife and the work of the Trust
• Willingness to work as part of a team
• Willingness to work in accordance with all relevant Trust policies and procedures including Health & Safety, Safeguarding and Data Protection.
• Willingness to apply for an Enhanced DBS Certificate. 
• Good spoken English

Volunteer training and support

• Induction training covering an introduction to the work of the Trust and information on our policies and procedures.
• Mentoring with an experienced staff member to guide and review your activities
• Training on Health & Safety Requirements, Safeguarding
• Use of Trust presentation equipment eg. projectors
• Reasonable travel expenses can be claimed with prior arrangement
• DBS check may be required if delivering talks to groups with children or vulnerable adults

Anticipated time commitment:

• Flexible – time commitment to suit volunteer but likely be 2-2.5 hours per talk including travel time and set up.
• For those interested in giving talks to school and youth groups, this will most likely be Mon-Friday daytime.
• Community talks will take priority but there may be an opportunity to get involved in other Trust activities
