The Big Give doubles your donation to protect ancient woodland

Between 20 - 27 April 2023 we’re teaming up with the Big Give to raise a total of £12,500 to help protect and manage irreplaceable ancient woodlands across Hertfordshire and Middlesex.

What’s more, any donations received during this week will count DOUBLE at no extra cost to you!

Why is Ancient Woodland so important?

Woodlands are vital wild spaces for people and wildlife. With their sweeping Bluebell carpets, choirs of songbirds, streams and ponds, they provide a sanctuary to escape the pressures of everyday life and a haven for wildlife to thrive.

Ancient Woodlands are a special type of woodland that have developed undisturbed for centuries.  Home to many rare, threatened and treasured species, they have the potential to support the highest diversity of species of any woodland type, but only with targeted restoration work. They also play a vital role in the fight against climate change by capturing and storing carbon.

The current situation

In Hertfordshire, just 4% of our woodlands are ancient and they are in desperate need of our protection – once gone, they are gone forever. Without traditional conservation management ancient woodlands are at serious risk - we also have a new and serious problem to address - Ash dieback. Caused by a fungus, this destructive disease attacks Ash trees and can lead to the death of the tree. Sadly this has a knock-on effect on other rare species that use the trees as their homes.

With one donation you can double the impact for your local wildlife and help us protect this vital habitat.

The good news, is that thanks to generous funders, including a Champion funder, The Reed Foundation, a large sum of money has already been pledged to the Trust to create a matched funding campaign to help protect and manage our local ancient woodlands.

You can unlock this incredible pot of money by matching it with donations during Big Give week. So, effectively every donation the Trust receives between 20 - 27 April 2023 will be worth DOUBLE! For example, if you donate £10 today it will unlock £10 from the pledge pot and be worth £20 to us at no extra cost to yourself.

“Ancient trees are precious. There is little else on Earth that plays host to such a rich community of life within a single living organism.”
