In a talk hosted by Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust and the University of Hertfordshire, environmentalist and campaigner Tony Juniper argued that the UK can become a world leader in environmental legislation but has to act now. He pointed out that a major issue alongside climate change is the decimation of wildlife – almost singularly due to human actions.

Famous environmentalist encourages us to help save Britain’s wildlife.
The web of life is being torn apart, often to final extinction on a rapid and global scale.
“The web of life is being torn apart, often to final extinction on a rapid and global scale”, the author said on Tuesday night at the University of Hertfordshire. With new environmental legislation on the cards, he continued, we are at a crossroads in history. An ambitious Environment Act is needed to not only protect wildlife but support its recovery. "It is my sincere hope that during the coming few years we will together finally begin to achieve the historic turnaround for Nature that we all know is so desperately needed.” He urged the audience of more than 300 people to take action to help stop the decline of wildlife by contacting their MPs and asking them to support a strong Environment Act.

This event comes shortly after the launch of The Wildlife Trusts’ national campaign for a Wilder Future featuring a film trailer for The Wind in the Willows starring the celebrities Sir David Attenborough, Stephen Fry, Catherine Tate, Alison Steadman and Asim Chaudhry, in which The Wildlife Trusts are asking people to join the fight for a Wilder Future.
Lesley Davies, Chief Executive at Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust, stressed on Tuesday night: “The time to act is now. We have already lost so much, but together, we can avert an environmental disaster. I am thrilled about the high turnout tonight, this really shows that people are ready and willing to take action for wildlife!”

Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust is asking people to join the campaign for a Wilder Future and take action for wildlife, either by making a positive difference in their local area, for example by creating a wildlife garden, or by getting in contact with their MPs to convince them of the need for a strong Environment Act.
Tony Juniper CBE, former Executive Director for Advocacy and Campaigns at WWF-UK and President of the Wildlife Trusts, has been a campaigner, writer, sustainability adviser and environmentalist for more than 30 years. He is a former Executive Director of Friends of the Earth and has written numerous books including the award-winning 2013 best-seller What has Nature ever done for us? and What Nature Does for Britain. He was made a CBE in 2017 for services to conservation.
