Wilder St Albans Wildlife Garden Champions

Gardens have enormous potential to provide safe habitats and connected corridors for wildlife.

There are 15 million gardens in the UK totalling an acreage greater than all of the National Nature Reserves put together, so what we do in our gardens matters! Large or small, gardens can provide a vital stepping stone for wildlife and be part of a patchwork of wildlife-friendly areas linking towns and the countryside.

Working in partnership with Wilderhood Watch, a St Albans based group formed by residents determined to make St Albans City friendlier for wildlife and people, we are piloting Wildlife Garden Champion volunteer roles.

Wildlife Garden Champions will encourage others across the District to make changes for the benefit of wildlife by providing advice and support to people interested in improving their gardens for wildlife.

Fifteen passionate volunteers from the Wilderhood Watch community are currently undergoing training and it is hoped that they will be ready to visit people on Wilderhood Watch streets and the surrounding roads from March 2022.

Every garden is full of potential, so this is a real opportunity to help improve the nature network across our District.
