It’s the Trust’s first Herts Rivers Week. What’s that? Why are we doing it? What’s happening? Read on and all will be explained!

What is Herts Rivers Week and when does it take place?

Herts Rivers Week is a celebration of our local chalk rivers and is taking place from 30 May to 8 June, with a full programme of events being held to spotlight these globally rare habitats.

Why is the Trust organising Herts Rivers Week?

There are only 260 chalk streams in the world, and our area is home to 10% of them – chalk rivers are the ‘jewel in Hertfordshire’s crown’. These river systems are incredibly rare habitats – and their unique qualities support some of our most vulnerable wildlife, including the critically endangered Water Vole, wild Brown Trout, and Kingfisher. We want to spread the word within the county that we are custodians of one of the world’s rarest habitats. So, for the first time, we have organised Herts Rivers Week as a focus point to get more people engaged in celebrating and appreciating their local rivers, through a series of events, which will be hosted by the Trust and its partner organisations.

We’ll also be encouraging the public to:

  1. Save Water – with simple tips and ideas to implement at home
  2. Call for protection – by learning how to stand up for our local rivers
  3. Create a pond – encouraging the creation of new wetland habitats in the county, as well as asking the public to register both new and existing ponds through the Trust’s ‘Pledge a Pond’ campaign
